KNMI Service Level Agreement
KNMI uses a Service Level Agreement (SLA) that has been established in consultation with registered data users and has been valid since July 1st, 2010. In 2011, an addendum was added.
The documents are available for download below.
Provision and service charges of actual data
All users in the public and private sectors are in principle charged for the costs incurred by KNMI in providing the requested data.
1. Data routing costs
These costs relate to the transport of the actual data from the relevant database or production system to the KNMI's fully monitored service environment.
The routeer costs depend on the daily number of data files to be delivered and the size of these files.
The primary cost factor is defined as "routeer unit", which is converted to a rate as follows:
- For the first 1000 units/day: per unit EUR 2.03/year
- Between 1001 and 5000 units/day for each additional unit: 0.51 EUR/year
- Above 5000 units/day for each additional unit 0.10 EUR/year
For one data product, a minimum routing rate of 133.97 EUR/year and a maximum routing rate of 21720.00 EUR/year applies.
In the KNMI Catalogue the available basic meteorological data is subdivided and defined in so-called data products. Basic data are the "raw materials" needed to provide meteorological end products and information services and as inputs to certain models.
2. Data extraction/transformation costs
If specifically requested data must be extracted from databases or production systems prior to delivery, the associated costs and a contribution to the management of the extraction program will be charged.
Any transformation of model fields is included in the extraction costs.
The extraction costs are determined by the requested data volume.
Extraction rate for model fields: 0.103 EUR/EPU where the EPU is a measure of the data volume. The number of grid points to be extracted per EPU is defined in the table below.

Extraction rate for current observations: n.a.
For one data product, there is a minimum extraction rate of 133.97 EUR/year and a maximum extraction rate of 21720.00 EUR/year.
3. Labor costs
For certain activities, KNMI may charge for working time. The labor costs are linked to the KNMI rate book (integral labor costs).
4. Costless benefits in kind
In the cases mentioned below, no transmission costs will be charged:
- Data are made available or exchanged in the context of research activities in which KNMI participation has been officially recorded
- Data are made available or exchanged for research in which it has been established that the results contribute to the KNMI's operations and knowledge infrastructure
5. Volume discounts
Discounts are determined based on the annual use of data
Discount applies to chargeable KNMI observations whether or not combined with observations of ECOMET members |
