General Data Protection Regulation

KNMIdata.nl uses cookies for research and web statistics to understand how visitors use the website. This information helps to improve the website. For example by supplementing information or by increasing user-friendliness.

To this end, KNMIdata.nl collects IP addresses of visitors, just like every website. These are stored in so-called log files. The log files are stored on the web server for 5 days so that they are available for the web statistics program Piwik. After that, the log files are kept for 90 days for security reasons and are only viewed for that purpose.

The Ministry of General Affairs has taken measures to limit the traceability of visitors to our website as much as possible. We do this by immediately after importing the log files into Piwik, discarding the last octet (number group) of each IP address. This is done in a temporary memory before the IP addresses are stored in Piwik.

After this, there is no further processing of personal data, because we do not have any personal data in our possession.

We collect the following data in Piwik:

  • used equipment and software (devices, browsers, operating system)
  • used links to get to our website
  • used links within the website
  • used search terms in the search engine on the website itself

Piwik obtains this information from the log files of the web server. These log files remain in the Piwik database for 31 days. Then they are removed. Only an aggregated (merged) log file remains. This produces an annual report on the website visit.

We do not provide personal data to third parties, unless this is necessary to report criminal offenses.

Cookies for web statistics

Generally speaking, websites require to ask visitors for permission to place cookies. The cookie law makes an exception for cookies that are not privacy-sensitive. For example, for cookies that track visitor numbers.

No permission from the visitor is required for cookies that do not or little infringe on privacy. These are often cookies that make a website work better. This category also includes our analytical cookies. Websites use analytical cookies, for example, to keep track of visitor statistics. This gives them better insight into the functioning of the website. Analytical cookies have hardly any impact on privacy.

Cookies for research

KNMIdata.nl conducts research among visitors to the website. A research script is loaded for this purpose. The script determines whether research questions will be shown to a visitor and which questions are involved. The script allows the visitor's browser to keep track of whether he or she has recently participated in a research project or has indicated that he or she does not wish to participate. With the help of cookies, the answers given in the questionnaires can be linked to the visiting behaviour. This is done on an anonymous basis and no personal data is involved. The following cookies are used for the research.
