API workshop January 2024

On Wednesday, the 24th of January 2024, we will organise the KNMI Data Platform API workshop. This day, aimed at anyone using or planning to use KNMI data, you can learn about the APIs the Data Platform has to offer. There is also plenty of opportunity to share with us your wishes and desires around KNMI data provisioning and API developments. The day is hands-on and primarily aimed at software developers and researchers using KNMI data. You can sign up via the registration form (required, limited seats available).

Program

09.00   Registration and Coffee
09.15   Introduction
09.45   Workshops Round 1
10.45   Coffee Break
11.00   Workshops Round 2
12.00   Demonstration Use Case
12.30   Lunch

During the "Consult our Data Doctors" session, you can ask our climate and meteorological experts specific questions about how to use KNMI data to address your meteorological and climate-related inquiries. To enable us to prepare this session, you can already provide a question using the registration form.

Workshops

Workshops 2024

Open Data API

The Open Data API can be used to retrieve files from our datasets. In this workshop you will learn how to make the API calls. You will learn how to retrieve a single file, a whole dataset, or specific files based on the filtering parameters. We will also touch upon how to use the different file formats that our datasets are stored in.

EDR API

The EDR API allows you to query datasets on specific parameters in a spatio-temporal manner, reducing the need to download entire datasets. In this workshop you will learn how to query the API, from simple to more advanced queries. You will also learn about the CoverageJSON output format, and how to visualise it.

WMS API

The Web Mapping Service (WMS) can be used to visualise some of our datasets. Our WMS endpoints can be added to different WMS clients as map layer. In this workshop you will learn how to use Open GeoWeb to access our WMS.

Notification Service

The Notification Service can be used to be automatically notified of updates to the files in our datasets. In this workshop you will learn how to connect to the service using the MQTT protocol. You will learn how to automatically start the retrieval of a file, when a KNMI dataset has been updated.

GeoWeb components

Open GeoWeb is an open source meteorological web client developed by a consortium of national meteorological services, including KNMI. The GeoWeb components can be integrated in your own website or application to visualise meteo data. In this advanced workshop you will learn how to setup GeoWeb components and Adaguc WMS server using Docker.

Future KDP

In this workshop you can discuss your wishes and desires for the future of the KNMI Data Platform.

Practical information

The day will take place in De Bilt, Utrecht, is free of charge and a lunch will be provided. Workshops will be in English. For participation in a workshop, you will need to bring a laptop. Sign up using the registration form (required, limited seats available).
