As of November 2nd, KNMI will change over from province-level weather warnings to local-scale polygon-based warnings. The polygons will be drawn by the meteorologist and show the specific area that the warning is issued for. The current warning datasets will be replaced by 2 unified datasets. They will be replaced with a “big bang”, there will not be a transition period. The date can be moved back if weather circumstances require it. Keep an eye on the KDP-community slack and this news item to stay updated.

Replacement datasets

The three current datasets will be replaced by two unified datasets. These datasets will contain both the warnings (48h ahead) and potentially dangerous weather (up to a week ahead). The KNMI-public-weather-warnings dataset matches the content of the app and website. This dataset is provided in CAP format and in JSON format. The KNMI-public-weather-warnings-extended dataset contains additional low likelihood potentially dangerous weather, and is intended for professional partners and users, including national and regional governmental authorities, emergency services and crisis management organisations. This dataset is provided in JSON format only. For more information about these two datasets, see the technical documentation.

Testing phase

The replacement datasets are still in their testing phase until November 2nd. This means that they will only contain test data until this date. More test data can be provided during this period. This data can be recognized by the PublicationType being set to “test”, and the warning sets have operational_status “test”. The data model is still subject to change until the transition takes place.

After November 2nd they will become operational and contain actual warnings and potentially dangerous weather. The heartbeat will start from 20 October onwards, so the technical connection with the dataset can be tested.

KNMI workshop

To explain the upcoming changes in more detail, we are organizing an online workshop for users of the dataset. This workshop will take place on October 14th, from 14:00 until 15:00. During the workshop, we will:

  • Explain what is changing and why;
  • show what the new warning data will look like;
  • discuss the impact on existing data users and applications;
  • provide an opportunity to ask questions and share feedback.
