Newsletter October 2022

With this newsletter, we will keep you informed of the latest developments at the KNMI Data Platform (KDP). This newsletter focusses on the replacement of the anonymous API key, the user analysis tool Matomo and new datasets in KPD.

Replace anonymous API key

Like every year, the anonymous API key has now been replaced and will be available until July 1st, 2023. To guarantee fair use and low operating cost, the anonymous API key has a one-year refresh rate. To bypass this inconvenience, you can use a registered key that does not expire. You can use this registered API key indefinitely (within the set "rate limit" and "quota") and you do not have to share the "rate limit" and "quota" with others. This gives you much more independence, and your application is no longer dependent on the lifecycle of the anonymous API key. For more information about the registered key, please visit the following website:

Termination of OSCAR/Surface Volume A legacy files by 14 December 2022

We would like to inform you that WMO Volume A “Observing Stations and WMO Catalogue of Radiosondes” will be discontinued on 14 December 2022. KDP does not have this dataset as open data, but we would like to inform you for possible impact on your existing systems. From December 14th and on, you must switch to OSCAR/Surface for the retrieval of station metadata (surface & radiosondes). Should you have any concerns and/or suggestions related to the termination of Volume A legacy files, or with the migration of your IT systems to the OSCAR/Surface-API, please contact us at opendata@knmi.nl

More extensive archive for Actuele10mindataKNMIstations/2

The dataset Actuele10mindataKNMIstations is a dataset that collects the observations of 53 automated weather stations with an archive of 72 hours. The historical data in this dataset is made available monthly per category/variable in other datasets. To bridge the gap between the Actuele10mindataKNMI stations and the archived data, the archive has been stretched to two months. The data in the Actuele10mindataKNMIstations has now been supplemented to these sixty days. This dataset is still intended as a near real time (NRT) dataset.

Matomo

We recently started using Matomo to analyse the behaviour of our users on KDP. We chose Matomo because the data is 100% under our own management, Matomo is Open-Source software and it complies with the AVG/GDPR. This means you can continue reading at Matomo itself. For the time being, we have only provided data platform with Matomo and hope to be able to improve the user experience in this way. If you have any good suggestions for improving our portal, you can always send it to opendata@knmi.nl
