Newsletter June 2024

With this newsletter we will keep you informed of the latest developments at the KNMI Data Platform (KDP). This newsletter focuses on Eumetsat data, Harmonie Cy43 and a new KDP-community meeting by Vandebron.

Eumetsat data will be broadcast by another satellite from 1 July 2024

From 1 July, Eumetsat will use another satellite (at 13 degrees east Hotbird) to distribute data from the Meteosat satellites. Distribution via the current satellite at 10 degrees east Eutelsat 10 (Eutelsat 10 B) will then cease. For a smooth transition, there will still be parallel distribution via Eutelsat and Hotbird during the month of June.

For customers with their own receiving dish, this means that on 1 July it must be aimed at the new distribution satellite to avoid lowering or even zero reception quality. If you have any questions about this, please feel free to contact the Account Management back office at the email address bckoffaccmgt@knmi.nl

Harmonie Cy43 update

All Harmony Cy43 products are now available on KDP, including the BES product.  This BES product contains the three datasets that were also available in Cy40:

  • BESS: 0.5 degree resolution, full domain
  • BEN: 0.25 resolution, southern island of Bonaire
  • BOV: 0.25 resolution, northern islands of St Eustatius and Saba

In addition, the migration of Harmony Cy40 to Iceland has been successfully completed. Products 1, 3, and 5 are now produced in Iceland and will remain available until 1 September 2024. These files have received a higher upload frequency, namely from every 6 hours to every 3 hours. The files are also slightly smaller, as the double surface temperature (11, 105, 0) only occurs once more.

Harmony Cy40 products 2a/b, 4a/b, and BES have been phased out with immediate effect. This means there is no transition period and users should switch to the Harmonie Cy43 alternatives now to ensure continuity in data and analysis.

KDP community meeting: 11 July Amsterdam

A new KDP community meeting will take place on Thursday afternoon 11 July, focusing on the new Harmony Cy43. This event is organised by Vandebron in cooperation with KNMI and offers the chance to get acquainted with developments in weather models and the associated data products.

Two presentations will be given during the meeting. The first presentation will focus on the future developments in weather models and data products at KNMI. The second presentation will focus on the use of the new weather models in the energy sector. The presentations will be followed by an open discussion: Wishes and requests regarding Harmony Cy43. This interactive session provides a platform for sharing ideas and suggestions to contribute to the further development and optimisation of the datasets.

The meeting will conclude with informal drinks at Vandebron's café, where participants will have the opportunity to exchange ideas over drinks and snacks.

For more information and registration, please visit the KDP community on Slack under the heading #general.
