Upgrade of Actuele10mindataKNMIstations
Continuing the success of its most downloaded dataset, KNMI Data Platform (KDP) has improved its most popular dataset Actuele10mindataKNMIstations. The dataset now includes more variables from all automatic weather stations in the Netherlands. In this bulletin, we give you an update on what to expect in terms of improvements.
Launched on July 17, 2023 at 12:00 CEST, the upgraded Actuele10mindataKNMIstations dataset went live. Existing users should experience a seamless transition. To test beforehand, use this test file.
As part of KNMI's continued professionalization of services, by the end of 2022 the decision had been made to discontinue the old delivery method by Service Level Agreements. The products that were provided from there have been migrated to the KDP. For the data product on synoptic in-situ measurements per 10 minutes, it was more complex to simply provide it on KDP. Therefor, this transition took considerable time and effort because of complex processes and the need to link different data sources without introducing errors. This article contains all the updates, but for more comprehensive and technical documentation, please refer to the documentation page.
Changes in variables
During the upgrade, the variable "ff" has had its rounding removed, resulting in more decimal places. In addition, certain variables were removed from the previous licensed product. These variables are listed in the table below, along with the reasons for their removal and/or the alternative variables implemented:
Variabelen | Alternatief |
---|---|
hm | hc - Cloud Base Ceilometer |
hm1 | hc1 - Cloud Base Ceilometer First Layer |
hm2 | hc2 - Cloud Base Ceilometer Second Layer |
hm3 | hc3 - Cloud Base Ceilometer Third Layer |
nm | nc - Total Cloud Cover Ceilometer |
nm1 | nc1 - Cloud Amount Ceilometer First Layer |
nm2 | nc2 - Cloud Amount Ceilometer Second Layer |
nm3 | nc3 - Cloud Amount Ceilometer Third Layer |
qn | qg - Global Solar Radiation 10 Min Average |
qnn | qgn - Global Solar Radiation 10 Min Minimum |
qnx | qgx - Global Solar Radiation 10 Min Maximum |
h10 | "Water Level wrt NAP" is a variable van RWS, found on Rijkswaterstaat Waterinfo |
h10z | "Water Level wrt MSL" is a variable van RWS, found on Rijkswaterstaat Waterinfo |
h1d3 | "Mean Height of Highest 1/3 of Waves" is a variable van RWS, found on Rijkswaterstaat Waterinfo |
th1d3 | "Mean Period of Longest 1/3 of Waves" is a variable van RWS, found on Rijkswaterstaat Waterinfo |
tw10 | "Water Temperature 10 Min Average" is a variable van RWS, found on Rijkswaterstaat Waterinfo |
Tgn24 | Never calculated and was always empty. Use the TG variable on Daggegevens van KNMI |
Tn24 | Never calculated and was always empty. Use the TG variable on Daggegevens van KNMI |
nr | Never calculated and was always empty, no alternative. |
rhb | This variable was a Relative Humidity Boolean and is used in an intermediate calculation in an internal process. Since this is not a measurement but a derivative, we no longer bring out these variables. |
Changes in stations
A careful review of all stations from which observations are shared has also been conducted. All available stations providing data have now been added. For example, wind poles and stations in the North Sea have been added to the Actuele10mindataKNMIstations. However, it is important to note that some of these stations might not yet be operational. The data are representative and valid for the weather being measured, but is not yet included in the climatologically validated series. Setting up that process takes time, but we don't want to keep you from these data. We are also in the process of opening up all station metadata as a new dataset. Keep an eye on the newsletter when this new dataset is added.
